We picked up the car at Tivat Airport and drove straight to Herceg Novi. The road along the bay was spectacular. We spent four days exploring the fortresses, took the boat to Mamula Island, and drove to Dubrovnik for lunch. Having our own car made everything so easy. The Igalo spa was a perfect way to end each day.
Herceg Novi surprised me completely. I expected a beach town and found a city built entirely on staircases, with three fortresses and the most beautiful monastery I have seen in the Balkans. The car let me reach the Blue Cave boat launch at Zanjice without relying on the erratic local buses. Would absolutely return.
We came for the Mimosa Festival in February and stayed a week. The kids loved climbing Kanli Kula fortress and we drove up to the olive groves above town for a tasting. Having a car meant we could visit Kotor and Perast on quieter weekdays. Pickup and return at Herceg Novi was completely hassle-free.

Tivat Airport is approximately 25 km from Herceg Novi centre. The drive takes around 30 minutes along the bay road, passing through Kotor and Tivat.
